Of course, but the damage is more subtle. If someone hits you, an outsider can see a bruise, if they manipulate you, then in theory nothing is visible on the outside. That's what I mean when I say it's less messy.
Scheming can definitely be more affective if you're trying to twist the knife, it's just harder to see. At least at first.
