Memories of Home [Text | UN: twotails]

[Instead of using the network to introduce himself, Tails decides to instead pose a question to the network. It would be good for him to get an idea of how many different people have been brought here, like him.

Plus, he's always insatiably curious, so...]

What's your universe like? What do you think makes it unique and special? And what do you like most about it?

[He almost sends it just like that - but realizes that it would probably be better if he himself gives an answer. It's only fair, after all.]

I wouldn't say my world is too terribly special, but it's a planet called Earth with lots of humans, and also those of us who've helped save the world a few times. We're not human, but we can talk like them! The person threatening the world is human, though. Builds a lot of crazy mad genius gadgetry and machinery to take us on. But I think he's finally mellowed out a little.

As for what I like most about it... well, everything! The forests, mountains, ruins, cities... it's so much fun to just soar over the landscape and take in what the world has to show. It reminds me what we have to protect, if it comes under attack again.

... How different are we talking?

He is an entirely different person from you, more or less.

There are some similarities but far more differences. And he is adamant on how he is nothing like you.

I was afraid you'd say that.

From what I've gathered, I'm not exactly the same as the Tails any of you know, either. I'm apparently much older than they expected. But I'm definitely not that different, either. Just... I guess, maybe a little wiser than I was.

Fair. I didn't have much from home come with me either. But there of plenty of technology users and ways to earn new tech to improve. I don't think I'd have much use for becoming human either, unless I needed to go unrecognized.

Lots to learn, and plenty of other tech people to learn with. Maybe one day we can put our heads together and learn from each other, too. I'd like to learn what other tech-inclined people here can pass on.

And how old are you exactly? Sounds like you are simply older than other Tails Sonic and others came across.

If could happen, especially if there's a need.

[He's hoping there isn't one anytime soon though. He's working toward this really slowly.]

Sixteen. I spent roughly eight years in a space between worlds at an academy, mostly keeping a close watch on the Doctor along with Sonic and the others.

Hopefully there won't be an urgent need yet. But if there is, I'm always willing to pitch in as much as I can to help. And even if there isn't.

Name's Tails, by the way. It's nice to meet you.

...Oh no, that's kind of adorable. My little bro has a girlfriend! ...Is this what old people mean when they say kids grow up too fast!?

[He has so many mixed feelings, Tails. Not bad ones! Maybe he wouldn't be so shocked about it if he wasn't eternally single but y'know.]

[There's a definite pause before the reply this time.]

Ah, I've heard about you. A little bit, anyway. You're the alternate me from the shattered universe.

[Given how their conversation has already gone, Tails believes what he was told about Nine being very different from him.]

While I've got you here... what's your story? You definitely seem to be much different from me.

If it would be easier, we could meet up. Or even switch to video to make it a bit easier. I have to assume from the whole 'too many evil geniuses' thing, that there's more than just Dr. Eggman tormenting your world.

She isn't even my first. [He laughs. But then for a moment, his expression falters momentarily, before jumping right back to smiles.] She was the one that was with me when the school fell, though. We got lucky and managed to arrive at the same time. She's sleeping in the apartment right now - otherwise she'd probably be asking you a million questions.

I'll definitely have to ask her.

[He has a feeling she'd be fine with it, though. Blaze might not be here, but he's sure Marine and Amy will get on well here too.]

So, how long have you been here?

[Amy thought over that question]

Seven, maybe eight months at most? It’s been a while.

I'm nobody's alternate.

[He can guess Tails didn't mean any offense by it, but it's a sore spot for Nine. But he does switch to video after a moment, because he hadn't planned to speak to Tails in sight of each other. The most obvious difference, going waist up, Nine wears clothes. Dark ones at that.]

Considering Mr. Dr. Eggman and the Chaos Council have been ruling my world for at least my whole life, yeah. But my story's not that in-depth. I lived in a world ruled by the Council until Sonic turned up. I didn't know anything about the wider Shatterverse since they're all separated from each other.

[He turns on his video - showing that he's about as tall as the Sonic here, and he's got various bits and bobs around him, with an open toolbox at his side.]

Perhaps 'alternate' isn't the best term. I didn't mean any offense.

Wait, Mr. Dr. Eggman? [Why would he have an extra title?] Either way, sounds like it's been, well, hell over there. Was Sonic able to help any?

I assumed you didn't but it is a sensitive subject.

[Nine's just a bit shorter, about eye level with Sonic's nose. He's just a bit younger as well. TAils's questions are mostly met with a shrug and one of his metal tails taking the phone so his hands are free now.]

Mr. Dr. Eggman. But to answer your question, Sonic's only got eyes for getting his world back. He's not really interested in the details of the Shatterverse at large. Technically his arrival made things worse, despite that not being intentional. The entire Shatterverse was about to destabilize before I got here.

[It's at this point he takes notice of the metallic tails - and he might have counted them. At least, all visible ones.]

That sounds like Sonic, alright. Seems in any universe he's laser-focused on that. [Honestly, it's one of the great qualities about him, in Tails' eyes - though he's painfully aware that in cases like this, it's definitely not good for others.]

So everything was going to crud fast when you arrived. ... And even if the Shatterverse got repaired, it wouldn't make things any better for you. You'd still be stuck in your situation. [He's assuming, in this case.]

Not really. If Green Hill is restored it could be the end of anyone originally from the Shatterverse. But the two portals the Council left open are destabilizing everything. So it's a bit like a ship that's been shot down with no good exits.

[Nine expression hardens a bit. Sonic's thoughtlessness is definitely his least favorite thing about Sonic.]

I've doing what I can to protect my new home. I can't speak for the other Shatterspaces though. And I'm done helping Sonic.

[HE'S HAD

TWO!!!????

Okay, okay, coming down from that whopper. Sonic runs his fingers through his quills to just smoooooth those back down aaaand we're good.]

This school sounds absolutely bonkers. Anyway, I'm definitely gonna have to catch up with her too... but maybe after I've had some time to digest the rest of this. This is kind of a lot, bro.

Wh-What!?

[His eyes widen at that - it could be the end? That Sonic's world being restored - rectifying a mistake that Sonic had made - could just wipe out the others in the Shatterverse?]

So... no matter what, it's bad.

I... [He lets out a small sigh. That was a surprising set of developments, all things considered.] I can't blame you for that. You're fighting for your own survival, and protecting what you care about.

[He nods.]

Oh, it is. I could tell you so many stories. But I'll save those until later.

[He's dropped most of the biggest 'what the hell' moments already.]

Sorry, I didn't mean to overwhelm you like that. [He gives a sheepish smile.] But that's just kinda how it's been. Personally, I'm interested in hearing what's been happening in your neck of the multiverse. I have some stories of my own from everything before the Academy that should be a little less, uh... crazy.

[Nine's a bit surprised by the empathy. He doesn't really know how to respond.]

I am, but also, Sonic's not my friend. He's Tails's fraiend.

[He's being careful not to conflate Tails as being the same person, even with the unpleasant turns his emotions are doing right now. He glances away.]

Anyway, that's pretty much my story. I don't really do friends, Sonic showed up was really friendly. Things blew up, now I'm here with Shadow and we've got a temporary truce.

[It's fine, he's over it... Well, he isn't, but he can fake it! He waves a hand dismissively, no biggie]

It's fine, I'm used to life coming at me fast. Keeps me on my toes! As for back home... I dunno man, it's pretty constant there, too. I'll have to narrow it down to my greatest hits.
