[ the video opens to a large, serpentine beast with a wolf's pointed ears pulling back from the camera, having apparently started the recording via booping the phone's screen with her snoot. she flicks out a forked black tongue once, then lays her head down on her paws and says slowly: ]

What do you do when you feel like garbage, and you can't do anything to fix why? When you've just got to wait it out.

...I don't know how long I'm going to be waiting, so. The more ideas the better.

[ a beat, and then she adds: ]

[ —before reaching out to tap the phone again, this time with a paw. animal lovers, enjoy that brief full-screen shot of pink snakewolf toebeans before the feed cuts. ]

Yeah. [blink blink] I know we're not actually related, but it feels like it, so that's why she's my big sister. I think lots of people here have someone like that. Jean-san said he and his sister were the same way.

I don't have anybody like that. ...Not here, anyway. I get it, though. My datemates went and adopted a new dad, even.

[Rinku giggles and smiles at that.]

I guess maybe that just happens sometimes? Maybe it's because we're all so far away from anyone we knew. Or because so many people here are so nice.

I mean... Sometimes that happens, period. You don't have to get pulled into a different world to want someone to be part of your family. ...My obaa wasn't related to my family by blood, but she's still my grandma.

Huh... That makes sense.

[Rinku snuggles Mecchan and Hina and lets them take their usual spots on her shoulder and on top of her head, respectively. She shifts ossicones behind her braid again so Hina will have a place to nestle and not fall off.]

There's a lot more to people and how we reach out to each other than you think, huh? Even if it's scary to think you might be different, when you think about it, it's actually really exciting!

[ Eve's voice has gone flat, for some reason, as have her ears— ]

[ —but whatever she was going to say is interrupted by a chirrup from off-camera, followed by a Snivy wiggling his way over the back of Eve's neck. he peers up up at her face, apparently concerned, before turning to the phone and hissing angrily at it while Eve tries in vain to gently scoot him back with her muzzle. ]

Bud— buddy, no— fuck. Sorry about him, he's been... fussy, lately.

[Hina tries to hide her head behind Rinku's braid, not doing a very good job. In her defence, Zubat can't see. Mecchan chirps and shrinks back, beginning to tear up.]

Eh? Does he not like other Pokémon or --

[Mecchan sniffles and bursts into tears. Rinku starts crying too from proximity.]

It's okay! What [hic] did we do, Snivy-chan?

[ upset Eve by accidentally hitting a sore topic, mostly, but she's not going to tell Rinku that now that she's gotten delivered a distraction— the girl hadn't meant anything by it.

she huffs and then grabs the Snivy gently in her mouth, making him goes from hissing to plaintive chirps as he's gently shoved into the crook of one of Eve's forelegs. ]

He gets along fine with my girlfriend's— Feebas? I think it's called? He's just... protective. Since he knows I've been feeling like shit.

[Mecchan shivers and goes invisible. Rinku wipes her eyes with the back of her arm and starts petting him to try and calm him down.]

He must be a really good friend, Eve-chan. [Hic.] I dunno why we made him mad, but I'm sorry. I want you to feel better too, same as he does.

[ the Snivy has at least settled down into a sulky flop over Eve's foreleg. she sighs and starts licking the back of his head. get cuddled, idiot. ]

...yeah, I know. Thanks.

[ a beat, and then she sighs again. maybe don't just fucking lie about it, Eve. ]

I... the short version is I used to get bullied for being different. So talking about how it's exciting kind of hurt. And since Mint's been fussy, he overreacted—

[ cue an indignant muffled scree from the Snivy ]

—buddy, the thought's appreciated, but you can't yell at everything just because it makes me upset right now.

[Mecchan hesitantly turns visible again. His tears slow, and thus do Rinku's. (Hina is spared from crying just by virtue of not having eyes, but she does poke her head back out and make a confused noise.)]

Oh... Sorry, Eve-chan. I've been thinking a lot about it myself, so I was trying to be positive about it like I usually do, and think about how much there must be left to find out about feelings and other people and stuff. I didn't know it was gonna upset you. I don't know what the people where you're from were like or how you were different from that, but I think you're a nice person.

Optimism's good, but sometimes...

...think of it like going from a dark room to outside when it's really sunny. It makes your eyes hurt, right? Sometimes positivity is like that if you've had a bad time.

Huh... I don't really get it, but I guess it's true. [sulk] What should I do instead though, Eve-chan?

[ ...give her a moment while she figures out how to word this in a way that is remotely tactful... ]

Keep it to yourself, maybe? If you think someone's having a hard time. Or you can just ask if it'd help or hurt.

[Rinku winces. She wants to protest, it feels wrong, how could
it hurt anyone -- but it had hurt Eve, and she's back to where she was again.

Hina starts chewing on her hair. Rinku doesn't stop her.]

I guess... I'm sorry people hurt you, too.

...thanks. It's not... okay? But I'm out of there, and won't have to go back.

I hope you get to stay here as long as you want.

[Mecchan nods and blows a bubble.]

It's nice here. I hope it stays nice.

[ ...she flicks out her tongue once, aimed vaguely at the bubble. not that video really works like that, but she can try. ]

It's okay even if I can't. I've got other places I can go, too.

...As long as my datemates come with me. But I hope it stays good here either way.

That sounds really nice. Getting to live wherever you want, whenever you want.

...It can be pretty okay. I've been traveling since I was fourteen? Aside from the part where people were shitty, I liked it.

Kind of weird settling down now, though.

I used to travel a lot too! When I was really little, my parents started moving us around to different places to study the animals. That's before we ended up settling on Tiotio Island.

It was almost always bad. Met a couple of nice people, but...
