Okay, hang on - what do you need? Something with a book?

[There is a long wait... or at least a couple minutes while Mecchan frets and tries to figure out how to respond. But after some trial and error, he manages to turn on the laptop camera and switch to video.

He's at Rinku's laptop in the music room, and he gestures to a colouring and activity book on the desk reading My Very Own Book. He opens it and pulls out one of the sheets (as tall as he is) to display a questionnaire that he's written on in big, shaky beginner letters.]

[Mecchan points to the almost-blank field and babbles nervously at the screen. "Solarpeak" is way too big a word! And there are so many more questions to go... this activity book is pretty daunting when you're just learning to read!]

Oh! Solarpeak. S-O-L-A-R-P-E-A-K. You're doing a good job so far!

[roundandaround]

[Mecchan picks up his crayon and keeps writing. L... A... He pauses and tears up, looking up at the camera with a sniffle. ...No, he's got to keep trying! He writes what he remembers, even if he ends up with SOLAPRRRK.]

I didn't know Rinku was teaching you to read and write.

[Mecchan puts the crayon down and warbles happily at the screen. He's trying very hard!

Hina flies up to him with a similar sheet in her mouth and drops it in front of him. They chatter at each other for a bit, and Mecchan starts filling out Hina's answers for her... older sibling duty when the younger can't see let alone read.]

[Mecchan holds it up to the camera. Is this okay?]

Hmm.

How do I explain this... basically it's when a person wants to own a lot of things. Like if you want to have a lot of bottle caps, someone will collect those. Does that make sense?

[Some hesitation, and then Mecchan switches to video. The sheet he's holding up now reads:]

[He looks absolutely, completely lost and babbles at the camera. He doesn't collect any of these things! Should he?]

[Mecchan nods! He points to "shells" -- he knows that word! And "bottle caps" and "rocks"! He puzzles over "trading cards," puts down the sheet, runs off, and comes back holding a business card for Beans -- is this one?]

It's a little different than that...?

[roundandaround]

[He puzzles over the reply for a while, then deflates and sits down in front of the laptop, thinking and occasionally blowing bubbles. Then, after a thought, he switches to text again.]

Mecchan! {Xie Lian is hoping he is right? This is adorable.} Are you alright? Do you need help?

[Mecchan has figured out how to turn on the video now! He appears on camera sitting on Rinku's desk with two kids' activity books titled My Very Own Book and a crayon; one is on his side, and the other he's helping Hina fill out, as she's now perched on it, drinking from a juice box by biting the side.

Mecchan lifts out one of the removable pages and shows it off. Look! He's learning!]

[Followed by a childish drawing of Fine Arts House.

Mecchan puts the sheet back and gestures to the same one on Hina's book. She doesn't have her own room! She prefers snuggling onto the nearest person and sleeping there! What's he supposed to put on hers for the question about the room?]

{Oh they are the sweetest little babies! Xie Lian grins and reads the page, his eyes bright.}

Mecchan, you write so well! {He understood all of that. Spelling can come later; the point is the Pokemon can be understood if he needs to write a message.}

I love your drawing too. I bet Rinku will put that on the wall.

{And then there is Hina.} There she is. Hina sweetheart, are you enjoying your juice?

{Then he sees Mecchan's question and he tilts his head.}

She likes shoulders, doesn't she? Maybe hair too? Those are nice places to sleep. Say she sleeps on people.

[Hina lets go of the juice box to squeak a hello at Xie Lian, not caring that juice is now dripping out of the box and onto the paper. She nods at the question and bites the box again to drink the rest of the juice.

Mecchan ponders this and nods. He picks up the crayon and writes PPEPEL in the blank spot on Hina's sheet. ("My room is people"? He's trying.) Once Hina is done drinking, he offers her the crayon so she can try and draw the house as well... despite, you know, not having eyes or hands. It's only fair. Hina takes the crayon in her mouth and starts randomly scribbling.

Mecchan babbles up at the screen, seemingly asking how Xie Lian is or what he's doing.]

Hello! {Xie Lian croons, wiggling his fingertips despite the fact Hina can't see him. He makes himself comfortable and watches the pair, his features soft. It's so nice to see children just being children! Rinku is young too and he wants the best for all of them.

He wants to protect them. But he can't be everywhere all the time. Just as he is letting out a slightly regretful sigh, Mecchan starts talking to him again. Smiling, he chuckles.}

I'm doing well, little one. I...actually... I found a surprise in my garden. I wonder if you can help me?

{A very small Eevee is curled up on his sofa, their nose tucked under their tail.}

[Mecchan looks nervous, but waves a little at the stranger. He tilts his head at Xie Lian. So he needs to know what an Eevee needs...? He runs off and comes back with a piece of kibble in one of his little hands. Babies eat these all the time! He holds it out to Hina and she eats it cluelessly.]

{Xie Lian kneels down beside the baby Eevee and gently wakes her, stroking over her fur.}

Would you like some dry food? {He chuckles at Hina and then lifts the Eevee into his arms.} Mecchan remembers being a baby, I'm sure.

[Mecchan scratches his head. He's not actually sure how old he is... Hina's just half a year old, though, she's still a baby! She squeaks happily and flies over to bonk her face into the laptop screen.]
