We're a week into the new year already, and I'm sure many of us have made resolutions. One of mine is that I want to try and become stronger.

I bought a Potion of New Powers, but realised that I don't really have a good understanding of what powers are out there in the worlds represented by us. Others among us may be struggling with the same thing, so I want to invite those whose worlds feature powers that would help us and Ellipsa to share information about them - if you'd be willing to give your blessing for others to attain them, that is.

If someone has that magic in their world and wants to share it, you should definitely attain it! But since I'm an adult, maybe I should choose something that lets me protect everybody instead.

[She really doesn't want any destructive powers - she has enough of those, back home, what with the wall titans under her control and her ability to manipulate her people's minds and bodies -, and she knows that it's futile to wish for multiversal transportation powers, but she wants to make as valuable a contribution as possible.

If making candy, in the end, is as good as it gets... well, at the very least it'd make people happy!]

The abilities from my universe deal with different... paths, so to speak. Usually most people follow one path, but I guess I'm a bit of a weird exception...?

I don't know if you'd be interested in hearing more.

[While "Paths" is a bit of a loaded term for Eldians in particular, Frieda doesn't assume any actual overlap, though the coincidence has her slightly more intrigued than she would otherwise be. That aside, she can't help but have a somewhat nerdy second association...]

It's not like in a video game where you have to choose whether to be a warrior, mage, rogue etc., is it?

[She's genuinely wondering (and hopefully, people from worlds that have these options as legitimate career paths won't be offended at her phrasing)! If that's what the paths entail, does that mean that Stelle is multi-classing, so to speak?]

It's a little similar, but instead of it being a class, it's more... associating yourself with an Aeon which has specific skills associated with them.

[It feels like everyone's world has its own complex metaphysical structures... but if she wants to learn about different powers, she needs to dive into that lore!]

My abilities are magic. Specifically in the spheres of Matter and Death. Those are my areas of expertise. It takes a lot of study and practice to master. And can come with some nasty side effects. But if you're patient and dedicated, it can be worth it.

Regardless of that, she's starting to see a pattern, namely that it won't be easy to wrap her head around pretty much any of the abilities she's gotten privy to thus far in this post and elsewhere (Mary's candy summoning power suggestion aside).]

From what we've seen here (like the skeletons controlled by warlocks), I feel like I understand death magic a little (though I'm sure there's more to it than just that), but is 'matter' not very encompassing?

I could help you gain a new power without a potion needed. I'm an expert at helping people like that. And yes, these powers should be gainable by anyone in this world!

[That's such a pessimistic username..! But then, there are many people here from hard-to-live-in worlds. Perhaps this person is still struggling what they experienced back home. The offer, of course, sounds interesting!]

Really? What kind of power is it?

Death can do that. It's really about change. Death is all about change, one way or another.

Matter, specifically, is the manipulation and control of inorganic matter. Rocks, metal, copper, gold, etc. Also, deleting it. If you are skilled enough. There's more to it but that's usually the big things people think of.

[That sounds cryptic, but also intriguing. As someone who's seen a lot of death, albeit only in her inherited memories, and who's desperate to prevent more of it, Frieda can't help but feel drawn to the subject... but the matter magic sounds interesting, too!]

What benefit would there be to deleting matter? Do you use that power for terraforming? Or, to ask differently: What would be the main applications of your magics in general?

[Is he a necromancer, a landscaper, an alchemist, a little bit of everything?]

[This is an interesting discussion. And talking about it isn't sending paradox flying around him. That's a good sign.]

I mean deleting part of a mountain to make a tunnel through it comes to mind. Or just cleaning up your room for something more mundane.

My main applications I guess are talking to ghosts, animating corpses, manipulating shadows, ice, and other matter. Magic comes down to imagination plus power plus knowledge equals results.

Mages can do a lot in my world but we're limited by the Consensus. That's a bit hard to describe in text but basically, if most people think magic isn't real, reality agrees. Which makes doing magic harder to pull off, and very risky in front of people who don't believe in magic.

Here that doesn't seem to be an issue. So really, you could do a lot with magic in this world. Like Seasonal magic can do what some of our magic can do too. Water is matter, water manipulation is easier.

Wind and Fire though are Forces, energy. So I'm not great with those back home but I'm Spring here so I have access to the Forces sphere now when it comes to wind. And Life with the healing abilities, which Death can't do as easily.

[It does sound like a combination of winter- and autumn powers, to a point - though the Consensus introduces a new rule. It may not factor into the equation here in Ellipsa, but Frieda wonders what it would mean for her potenial return home, where virtually nobody believes in magic. But she can't focus on that possibility. With the ability to transport her people here out of reach - she's certain that Max' powers are unique to him and can't be attained by others -, she needs to keep her mind on what she can do for this world.]

So solids and liquids are matter, but gases are forces, roughly speaking? I'm a spring power holder too, so I'd be similarly positioned. That said, you mentioned the dangers of your magics... what would those be?

Not a bad way to look at it. Not entire the case but not bad.

Paradox. It's a bitch. Basically, it's reality saying 'Fuck you, no' and slapping you in the lungs for doing magic. That is, if you internalize the Paradox. If you unleash it then, well, crazy shit happens. Magical deadzones. Abyssal monsters manifesting in the world. Gravity shutting off in places. Shit gets dangerous and escalates real fast.

Honestly it's usually better to just take the internal bruising and bleeding than unleashing Paradox to wreak havok.

[Oh... that sounds like rather serious drawbacks! But, at least in most worlds, no power comes without a price. She would know. Primed to protect the outside world at all costs, Frieda finds herself in ready agreement that internalising it is the way to go, but even so, it's a frightful prospect.]

It does sound like externalising the damage would have far worse repercussions. To make sure I understand correctly: This happens whenever the magic wielder's environment predominantly doesn't support / believe in magic?

[It seems like her initial verdict of it seeming safe to use on Ellipsa, but fatally dangerous in her homeworld is being confirmed.]

[Okay, that is impressive! Following a path directly associated with a god is a fascinating concept for someone whose people worship the (nigh-)unbreakable Walls protecting them rather than any "proper" deities.]

It's hard for me to imagine! Could you give me an example? What are your paths?

Pretty much, yeah. The Consensus stays if magic is real or not.

Here, in Ellipsa, magic exists. Everyone knows it. That's the Consensus. Makes it easier. Why is Darkness affected more by Seasonal magic than our own powers from other worlds?

The Consensus says it is so, so it is.

Perception is reality. Reality is perception.

If the perception and reality say, no magic. Then they punish changes with magic.

How far does that influence extend? Let's assume the people in a given location believe in magic, but think it's categorically bad and evil. Would that turn any kind of magic - even healing magic - harmful?

And since you mentioned a form of Consensus existing here, too - does it work the other way around as well? If we convinced everyone here that people's native magic can also damage the Darkness, would it be able to?

I follow the path of the Trailblaze primarily, which is a whole other story, but...

Destruction, Preservation and Harmony are the ones that I've obtained.

That sounds like a lot. How do those paths manifest? What abilities have they granted you?

It can be, on paper...

[And that's not talking about the path-related stuff that she's dealt with by going into the Simulated Universe.]

Most of those path abilities manifested when the Aeons looked at me, so I don't know if that part would be even feasible, here.

[It'd certainly be difficult.]

Most of them are oriented towards combat. The path I started off with allows me to basically hit things with my bat and I can do some minor healing. Preservation allowed me to gain the ability of a tank... ah, that is to say that I can force enemies to put their focus on me and create shields for the entire group I'm fighting with. And Harmony allows me to give my team some helpful buffs to help assist in battles. Obviously, there are more paths than the ones I've stated, but these are the ones I currently have.
