if a being somewhat reliant on the acknowledgement of others arrived here, the way certain types of gods or spirits are

I see. That makes sense - karma. There is a shop in Nightwake, called Riki's Rewards, that sells all sorts of useful items. Among those are wishing stars and dandelions, which otherworlders can use to retrieve an item from home. That isn't quite the same kind of 'better things' as what you meant, I'm sure, but it is the most well-known shop in Ellipsa.

I'll put it on the list of "places to ask the employers very politely about"
