001: Companion Creature Gathering, Video; un: togami

[Togami can be seen sat at a desk at the Winter Guild- his appearance was as well put-together as always, but the little plush-head of his new Mimikyu kept popping into the bottom of the frame despite his best efforts.]

Good evening, Ellipsa.

I see that other people have already covered the important matters of the local restaurants and job opportunities. However, you will inform me of any reputable fast food restaurants that you’ve encountered since coming here. I, Togami Byakuya, fully intend to try every single one of them.

But it's also come to my attention that I'm not the only one who's been gifted a strange egg recently.

Given the number of us in situation, I intend to arrange a gathering for everyone to bring their companions along, so that we can share information and advice on the nature of these creatures and how to best take care of them. If you are interested, inform me of your availability and I will organise the rest.

Sure! I can definitely show up! Though I gotta warn you that Mecchan's really anxious, so I might have to step out so he doesn't cry...

[Ah yes, that one had skittish tendencies...]

I'll ensure that wherever I host the event has a quiet area he can retreat to. Hopefully, my new companion will not frighten him too much.

[Moving his device a little- yup, that sure is a Mimikyu on the desk trying to peer at the camera! This one's a bit bolder than Mimi.]

These creatures are all very different, aren't they?

Yeah! The kid I'm looking after has a Mimikyu too, but Mimi-chan's nervous and hides a lot, like Mecchan. What did you name yours? It's cute!

Interesting. If you've had experience dealing with this type before, is there anything I should be aware of?

And thank you. It isn't long hatched so I still need to think of something suitable... names are important! It is not a decision to be taken lightly!

How did you choose the names for yours?

A Mimikyu is a Ghost-type, but you should still feed it! The kibble you can get from Riki-san's is good for babies. You can get the regular kind or the Ghost-type formula. I usually give Hina-chan the special Poison-type formula, when she and Mecchan aren't eating human food or other stuff.

Hmm, names... I didn't have a lot of time to think of one for Mecchan, so I just came up with the first thing I thought of. He was really crying hard and wouldn't stop, so mesomeso, then Mecchan. [Rinku rubs the back of her head.] And Hina-chan's name I write like "baby bird," since she hatched from an egg even though she's a bat, and also because the town both my old roommates came from had Hina in the name written that way. And we'd just lost one of them when Hina-chan's egg showed up, so I wanted to remember.

So it's already a Ghost from the moment its born...

[It already hit a little close to home.]

There is a lot even someone as knowledgable as myself has to learn about these creatures, it seems. Do have any more information about them? Mimikyu, I mean.

[Said Mimikyu perked up- Hello, yes, its here and would like attention, please. Byakuya idly pat its head, focusing on what she had to say next.]

Interesting... those are fine names, indeed. They suit your pair well.

Hm... let me think! They usually really want friends, and I think they wear the cloth thing so they'll fit in in case they scare people. Oh! And sometimes it can get damaged, so they should be careful fighting! My two don't really fight, Mecchan got too scared, but I think Hina-chan might wanna try it.

[The Mimikyu fidgeted, making an indignant little squeak as it made sure that nothing was visible underneath the cloth it wore. How dare-

Still, for Byakuya, the pieces started falling into place. The motivation was different, but... it disguised itself to be accepted and fit in with others. In order to try and exist in the world.

For a brief moment, his composure slipped- something resembling a quiet uncertainty, an insecurity slipping into his face- before the act came back as quickly as it left.]

If Hina-chan seems interested, we can always try and find similar-minded creatures for her to battle against. I'll see how this one feels about the idea once they are settled.

[Rinku smiles at the Mimikyu, unfazed. What's wrong with wanting friends? It's important!]

Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing you, Hina and Mecchan at the event. So far early April seems to be the most suitable.

That does seem to have gone around... I do wish we had been asked our feelings on the matter first, but I suppose what's done is done.

[ there's a squeaky rattling noise from off-camera, and then a Shuppet drifts over to settle on Kaiko's head. she sighs and reaches up to gently ruffle its ruffles. ]

My schedule is fairly open? I do work, but since the library is fairly self-sufficient I can be flexible with my hours there.

Yes, it's careless of whoever- or whatever- is responsible to abandon these eggs in people's houses without so much as a word to them. If I knew who to blame I would make sure they knew exactly what I thought of their negligence... however in the meantime, it's important we give our new companions the best care we can.

[He's only ever raised a tamagotchi before, this is very different!

At the appearance of the Shuppet, he leant in curiously to get a look, before adjusting his own device to show the Mimikyu who'd been trying to pop into frame- one all to eager to peer at the camera for a better look.]

Likewise for me, I've not taken to questing yet. I'll inform you when I have a date and location then.

[ NODDING— wait, the Shuppet is still on her head. nodding with somewhat less emphasis... then she and it lean in to get a better look at the Mimikyu. Kaiko coos. ]

—anyway, thank you for setting this up. ...and sharing my concerns. What if they'd left an egg in the care of someone unwilling to have or outright unprepared for a companion?

[ another ruffle for the Shuppet; it makes another chirpy rattle and squashes itself down in apparent contentment. ]

If asked, I certainly would have said I was in the second category— but I will be doing my best, and at least any conflicting feelings I have on the matter will apparently go to feed the child. Hopefully they're tasty...

[The Mimikyu happily squeaked back- hello! Friend! Byakuya gave it a little pay on the head- even so, he couldn't help but chuckle at the Shuppet's antics, before his expression turned serious again.]

Yes, we should be on the lookout for such creatures if they are being neglected as well. Even I feel somewhat unprepared, especially given that no information on their care has been delivered to us as well.

I am Togami, Byakuya, and I am heir to the Togami Cooperation. A name anyone from my world would recognise as a highly lucrative, world-wide financial conglomerate. I already manage plenty of the business' operations personally, so compared to that, organising something as small-scale as this is pitifully easy.

But yes, these creatures are certainly curious... I'll set the date for early April, in that case. That should give yours plenty of time to hatch.

[Oh, he's that kind of guy. Living in service to nobles his whole life has made him more or less immune to this kind of posturing, so he focuses in on what he deems the important part of the conversation.]

What do you consider a reputable fast food restaurant? I can...keep an eye out.

[ She's not entirely sure she knows what fast food is, so she's also a little curious. If she can get food fast and not have to try and figure out cooking, that would be pretty cool. ]

The ones in this world aren't the same as the ones where I am from, so we can't rely on the brand itself to assess quality. Without that, you want to assess the cooking practices and hygiene standards of the restaurant, before looking into how long they have been in business. Poor quality restaurants of all types turn over quickly.

...Or do you mean the types of food they tend to serve?

I meant both, I think...I don't know much about fast food. If my world has such places, I never had the chance to go.

...You must have encountered even greater hardships than I, if you were never even able to find familiar comfort in fast food.

That does it! I will investigate the establishments near the City Centre this evening, and tomorrow I can show you whichever one best meets my discerning taste!

At the thanks, he gave a cool nod.]

...But you might need to reconsider where you keep the majority of your stock, if he's going to continue to pose a problem.

Not to worry. I came up with a contingency plan already.

[That "contingency plan" arose when his partner Mari forced him to accept a personal cooler to use at work, and it was very much her idea rather than his, but details!! He holds on to the mayonnaise bag as if it contained ancient treasure.]

I just found 'em on my apartment's doorstep.

...I'm not sure if that's more or less concerning than just finding it turn up inside. But even so, whoever is just abandoning these eggs like this is completely irresponsible!

No kiddin'. I think the vending machine full of these guys is worse, though.

[Laterose gives the boy a wave, her Galarian Ponyta trotted up behind her and rested his head on her head right between her black and white buns. Rose giggled and reached up to scritch under his chin. His mane lit up, pale yellow and mint green in clear delight.

A horse that was also easily her size.]

Meet Mojito! He's a Ponyta, a variant regional to the area of Galar, apparently. Although the picture I was shown indicated he should be pink and purple.

Mojito, is it? A fine name.

[These Pokémon really did come in all shapes and sizes... and, it seemed, a variety of colours.]

We will have to look into whether alternative colourations is usual for these creatures as well, in that case.
