This is not a subtle approach, but it works for me.

1. Speak to them politely. Treat them politely. If you are the one paying on a date, make sure to hold doors for them and help them with their chair.
2. Inquire about their interests and their field of work.
3. Pour your attention and focus into the things they seem to enjoy the most. Even if these things seem boring to you, act as if they aren't. Make it seem like they are the most interesting person in the world, with the most interesting pasttimes and career choices.
4. Weave praise into it. From praise, shift to compliments on looks and the like. Do not start with compliments on looks, save them for this step after you've learned who they are.
5. Profit.

Note, if you opt to lie through steps 2-4 rather than show them genuine interest, then this is a very manipulative standpoint to approach from. But it works.
Pickup artists and con artists both have used steps like these for a very long time.

Alternatively, for a quick fix: look at whatever physical traits they are obviously attempting to exaggerate, point them out, and call them hot.
People with low standards fall for that one easily.
