To everyone who picked their own birthday: how did you pick it and what all did you think of?

Mecchan wants his own birthday. I know when Hina-chan's is because she hatched here in Ellipsa, but I don't know when Mecchan was born, and since Mary-chan just had a birthday a couple weeks ago, I think he wants his own.

So I wanna help Mecchan pick a birthday! Do you guys have suggestions or tips for him?

I chose Obon for my birthday, because I'm forgetful and 'twas a date I could remember.

Oh, that makes sense! And it's like still having a way to celebrate a holiday from home that we don't have here! Like if I missed Feria Oramena from when I was in Madagascar so I had lobster on my birthday. Right?

That seems reasonable enough. What is Feria Oramena? I'm not familiar.

It's a seafood festival in June they hold at on Madagascar! When I lived on Tiotio Island, we went to the festival sometimes with some of the other villagers. They have shows and exhibitions and stuff, it's really fun!

That's a good idea! I'll ask him! Maybe it should be a time when not a lot of festivals and parties are happening, too, so he won't get scared...

I agree. Besides, we need to celebrate him without confusing his birthday with a holiday or festival.

Yeah! I mean, my birthday's the same as Usagi-chan's and even that gets a little complicated trying to figure out who celebrates when.

She hesitated a little before answering, though. Because admitting she picked her own birthday meant admitting she wasn't like other people. After all, normal children had real birthdays didn't they? But with a lack of any idea when she was painted, it was the best she could do... her first day in a 'real' world.]

Mecchan should have a birthday too! And cake!

Mine is the first day I arrived in Ellipsa. That's how I picked it.

[And now she gets nervous and starts wall-of-text-typing.]

It means I've been here for a year too which feels really strange, how long have you been here you were here before me I think

I should write down Mimis birthday too and they they can all have birthdays! And presents! And more cake!

Yeah! I came in the first group, at the end of February that year. So it's been over a year and a half now, huh?

[How come she's texting...? Oh, she's probably just busy with something!]

Yeah, it'd be fun! I feel kinda bad that he doesn't have one, but I don't remember what day I got him out of the machine... Hina-chan hatched on June 7th this year, though!

How did you like all the cake? I had to freeze a bunch and put more in magic storage so it wouldn't go bad...

Mimi hatched on 20th April, but what machine? You never said Mecchan came out a machine.

It's one of the prize machines in the Underground Mall! I gotta take you sometime, it's kind of fun!

[Rinku pauses. She gets up and walks over to the soft room and knocks on the door.]

[Mary was about to type a reply to Rinku's message, when she heard the knock on the door- and almost dropped her device in the process!

Was that one of Mary's dolls suddenly lurking outside Mary's bedroom further down the hall, as if guarding the door from something? Couldn't be, right?

Mary herself, meanwhile, looked up from the pile of pillows she'd settled in.]

We're okay, Mimi's just being difficult- you can come in if you want.

[Oh- now this was interesting. Rider didn't really have much of an opinion on birthdays, and she'd long since forgotten when her own was. How would she even convert it into a modern calendar anyway? Far too much effort.

But something else caught her attention, instead.]

As pets or children... You would not think it strange if someone considered them as the latter?

[It was only the second time she'd actually discussed her views on this openly with someone else. Surely she was the only one who saw things that way, right?]

I dunno! It kinda feels like they are, but also I'm kinda unsure. I love them a lot, but I've never been a parent before. But they're a little different from Leon-kun. I mean, Mecchan's learning how to read! And he can brush his own teeth! And I taught him and Hina-chan how to dance and stuff!

It sounds like your Mecchan is growing well, Hina-chan too.

Perhaps it is because I am not human, but for me, seeing them as 'pets' or 'friends' seems... inaccurate. Especially as after I hatched my youngest. But identifying feelings like that is difficult.

[She'd had children- born from her blood after her death- but she'd never had the chance to be a mother to them. With her Pokémon, it were as if she was making up for lost time.]

I think I kinda feel that way too! I never really thought about it, but they're different. Friends might be closer, but friends you raise are just your kids.

If you raise them from when they are that young, I suppose that is true.
